What can I expect from the course?

Week 1: Introduction to surfaces and sketchbook use. Begin by creating sketchbooks, exploring alternatives, and experimenting with filling them through playful and minimal approaches. Engage in a loosening-up exercise using business card-sized pieces of white and coloured paper, along with ink. Focus on studying and capturing the form of a personal, sentimental object.

Week 2: Exploration of tools and mark-making. Create custom tools, stencils, and patterns using recycled packaging. Prepare collage papers for use in sketchbooks or on canvas. Experiment with handmade tools by testing them with black ink.

Week 3: Experimentation with materials and techniques. Work with paint, oil pastels, Posca markers, and paint sticks to develop methods such as washes, glazes, creating patina, carving paint with a J-cloth and polishing to add depth and history to surfaces.

Week 4: Exploring subject matter. Identify and refine themes, expand or narrow focus, and practice discernment. Begin pulling ideas from sketchbooks and transition to working on canvas.

Week 5: Editing and refining. Assess the content of your work, using tools like “L’s” to crop, amplify, unify, or cover up elements. Work through challenging middle stages and learn to let go of certain parts for the benefit of the whole composition.

Week 6: Bringing work to completion. Explore when a piece feels finished and how to conclude it effectively. Focus on display, discussion and assessing progress. Plan next steps and develop a clear action plan moving forward.
